Domain Names Explained Why It Is Important To Register Multiple Domain Names For A Website

Domain Names Explained A domain name is your website name.

A domain name is an address where Internet users can access your website.

A domain name can be any combination of letters and numbers,
and it can be used in combination with the various domain name extensions, such as .com, .net and more.

The domain name must be registered before you can use it. Every domain name is unique.
No two websites can have the same domain name. If someone types in www.yourdomain.com,
it will go to your website and no one else’s.

The price of a domain name typically runs between $15-25 per year.

But at Nutmeg Digital Marketing We Can Get Them Much Cheaper

It is also recommended businesses should buy multiple domain names
Your Business Is Successful
5 Reasons It Is Recommended to Register Multiple Domain Names for a Website is first People will register similar Names To Steal Your Business or impact it negatively if you have a large market share that threatens them. But this is not the only reason in this category.

Being successful also attracts hackers or other SEO’s that might duplicate your identity online to move your clients or customers to their own agenda. I have seen this many times before on my own websites. I have even been exploited by people who have bought variations of my domain name and then try and sell it back to me at an exorbitant price.

This is only one of many reasons you should buy or register as many variations of your domain name as possible right from the start. Even the TLD’s or (.NET, .INFO, .ORG) and so on. Once someone else buys these extensions to your domain name there is nothing you can do about it.

In the image below you can see an example of a famous brand Disney.com that bought the extensions of their brand name in different years telling me that they might have paid dearly if a smart person had bought them before they got smart and bought every conceivable variation of this domain which would cover many pages.

Buying Up Domain Names To Extend Your Brand
The next reason for buying up domain names is to extend your brand. Say you are an international brand and you want exposure in other countries. If you wanted your brand to show up in Australia say, people in that geographical location looking for say Digital Marketing Services would not find your brand there if you registered a .com.

But if you bought the extension.AU you have a better chance to show up in local searches in that country. Buying these kinds of extensions will give you the opportunity to build websites in different languages. Making it possible to sell products in different currencies which could give your brand a bigger market share.

You don’t have to create a website right away after buying these extensions. The domain names can be (parked) and used at a later time as your brand grows. Use this as a strategic way to grow your brand over time. Having these extensions also is great for SEO in those countries because people searching in those countries will find you. If you buy .au you will be found in Australia, if you buy .uk you will be found in the United Kingdom and .ca Canada and so forth.

So my advice is if you are planning to expand your brand internationally you should buy these TLD’s sooner than later, Because as discussed previously if someone else picks up that domain ahead of you they can hold the domain name hostage and sell it to the highest bidder. Again I have seen this in real life.

Buying Multiple Domains For 1 Website
So why would you want to buy multiple domains for one website? The reason is that buying multiple variations of a domain name will as we discussed previously protect you from scammers, The other reason is you could build other websites on them for other areas or you could just redirect them to your mother domain.

Let’s face it if someone is looking for your business and they misspell the domain name they will be directed to someone else’s site. Or even get a big 404 error. This will discourage them and they will google what they are looking for and go somewhere else. So having different various variations of your domain name, including misspelled versions will direct the searcher to your domain if it is redirected to the mother domain.

You don’t have to create a website all you need to do is redirect that domain name. As you can see in the image below you can do this easily from your domain registrar.

Why You Should Own Multiple Domains for Your Business | The Journey

If you’re like most individuals and businesses online, you are likely investing time, energy and money to send visitors to destinations you do not own or control. Marketing phrases such as “Follow me on Twitter” and “Like Us on Facebook” might be commonplace, but they are not necessarily helping you truly build your community. That’s where multiple custom domains can help. Check out more The Journey content at https://bit.ly/GDTheJourney.

Because otherwise, you are training your customers, followers and fans to search for you at third-party destinations where they are likely to face many potential distractions along the way. In essence, you are giving up your identity in favor of someone else’s brand. Using custom domains for your web addresses can help you build your unique brand and claim your space online.

How to decide how many domains you should buy?
By using logical and relevant custom domains as pointers to your social networks or other alternative online locations, you ensure your audience ends up in the right place — and you continue to build your identity and brand. But how do you pick which domains and how many?

Misspellings
One of the most important reasons to purchase more than one domain is to protect against user error. Because there is the potential for people to misunderstand what your domain name is when they hear it or make a mistake when typing it, you’ll want to make it a priority to own all common misspellings of your company’s name.

Local Competition
For SEO purposes, business with various locations that cater to different audiences often take advantage of owning specific domains for each. If you have a keyword strategy in mind for your local market, having an individual domain for each one will help you take up more “real estate” in search results.

Better Branding for Your Business
You could also register generic top-level domains (gTLDs), such as .store or .pro, to target various communities and highlight segments of your business. If you already have a traditional domain ending like .com or .net, purchasing a domain with a different TLD alongside it may allow you to stand out from the crowd and highlight a specific focus of your brand.

People Can/Will Buy Your Domain To Trick People
Cybercrime can come in different shapes and sizes: hosting malware, phishing content and other scams. If your business name is available, they will buy it. At that point, you *maybe* could try and ask them to sell it to you… but then they could charge any price they want to sell it back to you. Same goes if a very common misspelling of your domain name is still available.

What do to with all these domains
When you register a domain, there is no requirement to create a website for it. You can simply set it up so that anyone who visits it is redirected to another website.
With most registrars, it’s easy to forward multiple domains to your website so you can simply create one site and then redirect visitors who type one of your other domain names to that one website.
Perhaps it is time to let go of the single domain, portal mentality, and open yourself up to a marketing and branding strategy that utilizes multiple custom domains to create logical and memorable links to all your online locations.

The Journey is what everyday entrepreneurs, like you, need to follow in the pursuit of online success. Our experienced GoDaddy Guides are here to take you through all the steps, both big and small, that you encounter every day.
